THE TEN YEAR OLD BOY

One of the best descriptions of the the dreams, fears, and mysteries that occupy the mind of the ten year old boy is by Mark Twain in his classic The Adventures of Tom Sawer. It wouldn't hurt any Webelos leader to re-read it ( I hope that all have read it, at least once) and refresh their understanding of what drives this facinating life form.

ACTIVITY BADGE FUN

Aquanaut-

• Have a water rescue demonstration at a swimming party.
• Hold swimming, snorkel, or boat safety instruction.
• Take a rowboat cruise.

Artist-

• Attend an art exhibit or visit a museum.
• Hold an “art can be fun night.”
• Have each Scout prepare a color scheme for his room.
• Make drawings from nature.

Athlete-

• Simple exercises.
• Attend a high school or college athletic event.
• Visit a high school team workout.

Citizen-

• Attend a naturalization ceremony.
• Observe voting process.
• Visit court; have a judge speak to the boys about citizenship.
• Tour police or fire department or the municipal building.

Craftsman -

• List tools needed to complete the badge.
• Make tool chest or bench hook for sawing.
• Visit a furniture factory, lumber mill, or lumber yard.
• Have birdhouse building contest.

Engineer-

• Visit a municipal engineer's office, surveyor's or architect's office, municipal water works, TV or radio station.
• Explain how to read topographic maps.
• Take trip to college engineering department.

Forester-

• Visit tree farm or nursery.
• Get wood samples from lumber yard and identify then.
• Grow tree seedlings.
• Visit a forest ranger.

Geologist-

• Take a treasure hunt for rocks and minerals.
• Tour a quarry mine or gravel pit.
• Visit an industry that uses geological materials.

Naturalist-

• Make a leaf or nut collection.
• Visit a wild area different times of year.
• Keep a nature notebook.
• Visit zoo or nature center.

Outdoorsman-

• Make a tent.
• Make a first aid kit.
• Have a den cook-out.
• Learn aluminum foil cooking, practice camping in backyard.

Scholar-

• Visit Board of Education office.
• Tour a college campus.
• Have a library tour.
• Talk with a school principal on the benefits of education.

Scientist-

• Visit an eye specialist.
• Have school scientist demonstrate an experiment.
• Visit an airport and ask expert to explain flight principals.

Showman-

• Attend a play.
• Prepare and put on a one act play at pack meeting.
• Write an historical play for a den meeting,
• Record voices so they can hear the sound.

Sportsman-

• Attend a sports event.
• Have an umpire talk with the den.
• Talk with a team member. Hike around a golf course.
• Visit a Bowling alley.

Traveler-

• Visit a county, or state.
• Visit historic site near your community.
• Take a bus or train trip.
• Visit a travel agency
